On two Sundays in July, our favorite raconteur, BCCM Artistic Director Paul Hope, will bring his wit and encyclopedic knowledge of all things Broadway to this first-of-a-kind event…exclusively for BCCM fans and their guests.
The lectures will be interspersed with videos and music. There will, of course, be plenty of time for questions and for enjoying the company of your fellow theatre fans.
Sunday, July 11, 2010: Paul will take you on a Broadway journey (from 1900 to 1950) beginning with American operettas and Jerome Kern’s groundbreaking Showboat through the sophisticated music and lyrics of Cole Porter and Rodgers & Hart. This first lecture will end with the Rodgers & Hammerstein revolution that brought us Oklahoma and Carousel.
Sunday, July 18, 2010: Paul continues the journey from 1950 through 1970, exploring the end of the Rodgers & Hammerstein era before looking in-depth at two shows that changed the musical theatre: West Side Story and Gypsy. Paul will also examine the work of the mid-century’s most creative choreographers: Jerome Robbins, Bob Fosse, and Michael Bennett. This lecture concludes on a high note with the arrival of the genius of composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim.
